Reflection
This course has been a very intriguing course and I've learned so much in such a short period of time. Before this class I took Film & Culture because I thought it would be an easy A, but when I took African-American Film & Culture I learned things unimaginable. I felt as an African-American I was unaware of a lot of things that I should've known. I especially liked how open the class was for discussion and it wasn't strictly lecture. We were assigned readings and everyone grasped different aspects of these readings and there was no wrong answers, it was what you interpreted. For the future class, I would advise them to go in with an open mind and try to absorb as much as possible. You learn a lot about films and the different techniques writers and directors use, but you also appreciate their art more. I would also say, don't be afraid to be a part of the class discussion. Everybody may not 100% agree with you but, it could open their eyes to something the could have at first overlooked. Lastly, the final (the short film) I would say have as much fun as possible. It was really difficult trying to put everything together and sometimes it was hard to get the cast to meet up, but it was fun and you really learn how complicated making a film really is. As long as you stay on top of things everything will be fine.
